Came across this story and felt like sharing it. Reading it may refresh the perspective of
today's modern professionals.
Once when Sri Krishna and Arjun were visiting a town, they
saw a poor Brahmin begging. Arjun pitied the man and gave him a bag full of
gold coins. The Brahmin was ecstatic and was rushing home dreaming of all the
things he could do for himself and his family when a thief stopped him and robbed
him of his gold. The Brahmin was absolutely devastated but there was nothing he
could do except start begging again. The next day when Arjun saw him and learnt
of what had happened to him, he decided to give him another chance. And so now,
he gave the Brahmin a priceless gem stone. The Brahmin was very careful this
time and he quickly went home and hid the stone in an old unused pot in his
house. And since he was quite relived and tired by now, he happened to fall off
to sleep. While he was sleeping his wife who had gone to fetch water from the
nearby river returned home because her pot had broken on the way and she
decided to take the old pot to fetch the water. And when she dipped the pot in
the flowing water, the stone got swept away. Now the Brahmin was totally
crushed and he concluded that nothing could ever change his fortunes. And when Arjun
found out what had happened, he too reached the same conclusion. But when
shared this thought with Lord Krishna, he smiled, and while assuring the
Brahmin that his time would come, he gave him 2 paisa’s and asked him to go.
Once he was on his way, Arjun asked Krishna that if a bag full of gold and a
priceless gem could not change his fortune, what could 2 paisas do. The lord suggested
that they could follow the Brahmin and see for themselves. A little while later
they saw that the wandering Brahmin came across a fisherman who’d just caught a
large fish from the river and was on the way to the market to sell it. When the
Brahmin saw the fish gasping for breath and struggling for life, he instantly
felt tremendous sympathy for it and he decided to save its life. Since there
was little he could do with his 2 paisa anyway, he decided to give it to the
fisherman in exchange for the fish. He was taking the struggling fish to
release it back in the water when the fish suddenly coughed something out and
when the Brahmin bent down to look, he found that it was the same precious
stone that he had lost. He quickly tossed the fish into the water, picked up
the stone and started yelling in excitement, “Mil Gaya, mill Gaya!”(found it,
found it!) And that’s just when the thief who’d robbed him happened to pass by
and when he heard the Brahmin shouting “mill gaya” he thought he’d recognized
him and would report him to the king’s durbar. He fell to the Brahmin’s feet,
begged his forgiveness and handed him back his bag of gold.
Arjun was amazed at the turn of events and asked the lord
why the Brahmin’s fortunes had changed so dramatically so suddenly. The lord
smiled again and explained that Brahmins fortunes had changed because his
thought process had changed. When he received the gold and the precious stone,
his only thoughts were about the happiness that he or his family could get. But
when he had just 2 paisa, he thought of someone else’s pain and suffering and
acted to serve the creature! And the truth is, that when anyone serves someone,
they’re doing god’s work. And when you’re doing god’s work god and good fortune
will always be with you!
This theory is relevant and true even in today's modern world. It is a fact that mostly, we what we receive is in direct proportion to the value that we provide to people or organizations. Of course what we earn matters, but fortune is more likely to favor us or our businesses when we start focusing on providing value first without bothering about the rewards. If what we provide or bring along is of value, rest assured, money, success and fame will follow.
